When I went to church, I was given a pink carnation. On the flower, there was a small tag attached to it and it said, “We will never forget. The pink carnation symbolized remembrance. He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalms 147:3).
It amazes me how I clearly remember what I was doing on September 11th, 2001. It was bright sunny day and I was running late to the mechanic shop. I received a phone call from my mechanic telling me the World Trade Center was struck by a plane. I thought it was an accident and then I heard about another plane hitting the South tower. I knew it was a terrorist attack and I was shocked. Unfortunately, I lost 2 classmates. And, I have a close friend left with harsh memories but thankful for being alive.
Afterwards, it took me a long time to gather enough strength to visit the World Trade Center site. I went to the National museum and walked through the guided tour listening to the different stories. It brought chills down my spine.
As a New Yorker, I do remember the times of 8:46am, 9:03am, 9:59am and 10:28am on 9/11. Our country was changed forever. It was a day of grief and heart break. Also, it was a day of courage.
Today and every September 11th, I will place my pink carnation down in honor of those who died and for those who risked their lives for others.
Hugs,
