I am grateful for the four seasons. Although the extremes get to me, I still enjoy being able to feel the changes occur….it’s how I know I’m alive and able to experience the beauty of the seasons! Living in New York allows me to feel the changes in the air and see the changes in my surroundings.
Let me get this out of the way: my allergies can wreak havoc on me, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying all of nature. The extremes of the seasons can be annoying, but as the saying goes: ”You have to take the bad with the good.”
WINTER:
Nothing beats the elements of winter. I am not a big fan of shoveling what a Nor’easter just dumped on us, but the freshly fallen snow and all that’s associated with it are AWESOME to experience! I just have to remind myself that eventually the snow melts and the annoyance is only temporary (even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time). What’s not to love about: sledding, tubing, snowboarding, skiing, Christmas and all its accompanying decorations, scents, and sounds….the list is endless! It’s also nice to enjoy hot soup while watching the snow fall outside your window (if you’re lucky enough to have that luxury).
Where would I love to go in the Winter? Preferably someplace warm – the Caribbean, Florida…you get the picture. If I want to experience the coldness of the weather, I’d much rather stay home where I’m most comfortable and I pretty much know what to expect.
SPRING:
My favorite season of all the four seasons. I’m able to walk around in a light jacket or no jacket at all. The light, balmy breeze is comfortable and the sights and sounds of Spring make me feel so good to be alive. Seeing bulbs sprout and breaking through the hard ground of Winter means nice weather is around the corner and represents life waking up out of the darkness (wow that sounded so poetic!). Even though I may have horrendous days of not being able to see or breathe because of my allergies, I am still in love with this season. Yes, I even appreciate the rain, despite the fact that it may be a bit of a nuisance.
Where would I love to go in the Spring? Practically ANYWHERE (botanical garden, anyone?) – provided the weather is the same at my destination. Obviously I wouldn’t escape my favorite season at home to go somewhere snowy!
SUMMER:
I love summer because I can wear flip-flops, and the weather is nice for being active and outdoors, partaking in all that life and nature have to offer. I’m not a big fan of extreme Summer where there are 100 degree days with 75% humidity. Who can breathe in thick air? I don’t like the stickiness and baking in the heat. I also don’t like getting into a 150 degree car that’s been toasting in the sun (sometimes the air conditioner couldn’t get to “freezing” fast enough!) What’s great about summer is that there are some things you can do ONLY in the summer an no other time of the year.
Where would I love to go in the Summer? Somewhere where the weather is equal to summer at home, but then again, if there’s plenty to do near home, why leave? Staycations can be fun too!
FALL:
I love early fall with the crisp, clear air. What I don’t like is late fall with freezing rain, wet leaves to rake (that are heavy once they’re in a bag) and the lead-in to Winter. I love pumpkin anything, leaves changing colors (I can’t explain how much I love this), and anything else associated with this time of year. I love breaking out the boots that pull together a nice outfit.
Where would I love to go in the Fall? Anywhere there is a where the viewing of the foliage change is optimal. Sometimes driving up the thruway is enough for me – just seeing the change in the comfort of my climate-controlled vehicle (road trip, anyone?) is enjoyable and exciting for me. I heard that the foliage change is great in Maine and Vermont. Where I live is usually last based on the weather we have. I’ve also been to Peddler’s Village in Pennsylvania – it’s like a “market” where you can see holiday crafts, gifts, and taste goodies made from homey ingredients – Apple Cider Donuts, anyone? Those donuts coupled with hot chocolate on a pleasant Fall day makes for the quintessential perfect Autumn outing.
Do you have any stories you’d like to share about your favorite season or favorite place to go within a particular season? I’d love to hear it!
