This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking in the newest show Radio City Music Hall is putting on. It has a limited run, much like its perennial well-loved and well-known counterpart, the infamous Christmas Spectacular.
Two years ago, I purchase tickets to the original springtime show named Heart & Lights. Lo and behold, a few weeks before the shows were supposed to start, I received an e-mail stating that the show was cancelled and that my money would be refunded. A day or so later, I saw a news piece stating that the show was cancelled due to some production and technical difficulties. How bummed was I???? I was beyond excited since I’ve been to the Christmas Spectacular many times and it never gets old! Going to these shows makes me feel like a kid again (literally) and have I told you that I STILL have a dream of being a Rockette? I am obsessed with them and oh how I would love to BE one of them!!!! Anyway, I just knew that the new show would be just as good!
Anyway, they returned the funds and I just about gave up on seeing a springtime show. Months later, I received an e-mail stating that because I originally purchase tickets to “Heart & Lights”, I was being offered a discount on tickets to the new show, the “Spring Spectacular”. That was last year, and now, this year, I was able to finally see it!
It is the first run of the show, and its run will go through May 2nd. It opened on March 12th. There are so many reasons I LOVED the show (and these are in random order)!
1. The talent.
What was so exciting about this performance is that the stars of the show are Derek Hough, (whom you may know from the show, Dancing with the Stars) and Laura Benanti (from the show, Nashville).
2. The ‘storyline’.
This ‘spectacular’ had a slightly more Broadway show feel to it because there was an underlying story that imparted a great lesson
3. It’s great for the entire family.
Entertainment for adults and kids alike! Everyone in the music hall had a GREAT time and it was quite palpable.
4. The sights.
One of the best highlights about the show is that along with the storyline, it showcased major New York City landmarks and offerings. From the Statue of Liberty to the New York Public Library to Central Park, each landmark shown was given its own time. The storyline would take us to the landmark and for a twist, the landmark would “talk”; before the scene begins, a bit of information is given about the location. The first one was the Metropolitan Museum of Art and some background was given on it.
5. The Rockettes.
Have I said how much I LOVE the Rockettes? From the costumes to the choreography, everything is how it should be – a la Rockettes style. Granted, there were some ‘hiccups’ in the production, but you get so enraptured with all that is going on, you almost forget it happened. For example, there was a costume malfunction, but as a consummate professional, the Rockette continued on. Some Rockettes dropped their props, but “the show must go on” and indeed it did.
6. The colors.
Well, it IS a spring show, so what’d you expect? The vibrant colors and the use of colors throughout the duration of the show made you forget that it was still winter in real life. You’re almost transported to a different climate, all from the comfort of your seat. The flowers, the Easter bunny – you could practically SMELL Spring inside the music hall!
7. The cameo appearances.
Didn’t really know what to expect, but it was great seeing/hearing the cameo appearances, whether on the screen or via voiceover.
8. The mini-fashion show.
Hey, it wouldn’t be New York without a fashion show, right? A few designers participated and what a great way to show off one of the fashion design capitals of the world!
9. The special effects.
I don’t want to go into too much detail – I would much rather have you go see them for yourself and enjoy it firsthand!
Listen…I could go on and on, but I think you should just see the show for yourself! Trust me, it’s well worth the money!!! I’m already making plans to go with the same frequency that I do with the Christmas Spectacular. For the adults, it’s a great stress relief – you’re transported to another world where you can forget your cares – even if it’s for an hour and a half! You can’t help but smile and simply enjoy yourself! If you’re visiting New York and need yet another thing to do in the city that never sleeps, this is it!
New York has done it again. Radio City Music Hall has done it again. The Rockettes have done it again. Superior entertainment.
Anybody ever been to the Christmas Spectacular? Would you consider seeing the Spring Spectacular? By the way, you can still catch the Rockettes’ New York Spring Spectacular right here. Would love to hear about it! Let me know your thoughts!
Happy Watching,
