Most of you see Memorial Day as 3 day weekend and the start of the summer season. I know you are making your holiday plans…..packing up and getting out of town, going to the beach or heading to the barbecue.
Am I right? It’s all good. I want you to have a good time. Matter of fact, I’m spending Memorial Day with my family at the Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania. However, I want all of us to remember the true meaning behind Memorial day……a day to remember those who died in active military service. It’s important to respect those men and women who died defending our freedom. Without their courage, America will not be the country it is today.
So, in the midst our long weekend getaways, barbecues and trips to the mall for the latest sale, we should take time to commemorate those who died for our country. And, there are many ways to do just that. Most places in the United States have a special ceremony or events to celebrate Memorial Day.
Around my neck of woods (greater NYC area), 1,500 seamen sailed into NYC with a parade of ships for fleet week. In celebration of the sea service of the U.S Navy, U.S. Marines Corp. and Coastal guard, two navy ships (USS McFaul and USS Cole) and two US Coast Guard Clippers sailed in NYC for thousands to see. And, to top it off, the Blue Angels gave an awesome air show.
So, there’s plenty you can do to honor the day. And, you can enjoy your long weekend 🙂 Let me know what you are doing for Memorial Day. I would love to hear it! I will tell you about my Memorial day weekend…so, stay connected. Have a good one and be safe……..that’s it for now.
Hugs,
P.S. Did you know Memorial day was originally called Decoration Day to remember the Union and Confederate soliders who died in the Civil War? Then, in later years, it was extended to all Americans who died in active military duty.
